How the US suing Apple could change Australians’ digital world

The US Department of Justice has taken Apple to task over the very things it’s being tried for in a Melbourne courtroom. Does one case affect the other?

The charges laid by the US Department of Justice and 16 US states against Apple at the end of last week, alleging it has violated US antitrust law by abusing its iPhone monopoly, begins with a story that wouldn’t be out of place in a Melbourne Federal Court where Apple is now facing a civil lawsuit that touches on some of the same issues.

The DOJ recounts a 2010 email sent to Apple co-founder and then-CEO, Steve Jobs, about an advert for Amazon’s Kindle, showing that Kindle users can easily switch between iPhones and Android phones, at least for reading their Kindle ebooks.
