NSW Police want tighter laws around the prosecution of hacking cases following the acquittal this week of an IT contractor on charges related to data theft that led to names, addresses, phone numbers and financial information held by ASX-listed valuer LandMark White being posted on the dark web.

The near-two-month trial of former IT contractor Stephen Grant ended on Monday after his acquittal by a NSW District Court jury on all 22 charges, including unlawfully accessing and modifying information and dealing in identification information with intent to commit fraud.
