Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has defended three of his ministers for criticising Victorian judges over terror sentencing and suggested the judges toughen up..

Lawyers for Health Minister Greg Hunt, Human Services Minister Alan Tudge and Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar are due to face court on Friday to explain why they shouldn't be referred for prosecution for saying the Victorian judiciary was being soft on terrorists. The ministers were ordered to explain their comments to the Victorian Supreme Court but they won't have to appear in person.
