    An Indigenous man who was set to be deported under character laws was not detained illegally, the High Court ruled on Wednesday, the latest chapter in a series of landmark cases related to the treatment of “aliens” under the constitution.

    Brendan Thoms spent 500 nights in the Pinkenba Immigration Transit Centre in Brisbane following his release from prison in September 2018, after a domestic violence conviction.
