Washington/Shanghai | Donald Trump is ramping up his tariff threats ahead of this weekend's summit with China's Xi Jinping, saying it was "highly unlikely" he would agree to delay a planned January 1 hike in imposts on $US200 billion ($277 billion) of shipments to the US.

Speaking days before he flies to Argentina for a scheduled Group of 20 meeting with the Chinese president, Mr Trump is talking down expectations of a breakthrough to end the worsening trade war.
